The Surviving Winter project has been organised through the Somerset Community Foundation who appoint delivery partners across Somerset to distribute funds to the most vulnerable
Last year, in Somerset, there were almost 600 winter-related deaths according to provisional analysis by Somerset County Council. This is a marked rise compared with the underlying average of 300 ‘excess winter deaths’ each year.
Around 90% of these winter deaths occur amongst older people, and is the most visible evidence of the level of suffering and hardship that hundreds of older people experience each year because of the cold weather during winter.
It does not have to be this way.
Since 2010, hundreds of people who can afford to go without their Winter Fuel Payment have donated an equivalent amount to the SCF raising over £360,000. They redistribute it through local charities and organisations that are in contact with the most isolated and vulnerable older people in our communities.
In the last 4 years we have distributed over £20,000 to elderly residents in our community to help them stay warm in winter.
If you know of anyone who would benefit from receiving a small grant to help them keep warm this winter they should call the information & advice offcie at Age UK Somerset on 01823 345613
